Halo 3 Multiplayer Tips. How to get good!

Getting good takes some work. You could win cash!

These Halo 3 Multiplayer Tips were compiled as the “most important” from Halo Pros.  There are lots of smaller points, but these are the BIG ones.  If you want to get really good at Halo 3 combat then using these tips will require some work on you part.  It may be well worth bragging rights among friends or possibly money in your pocket if you decide to compete professionally.  Go for it!

1. Jump or not to Jump?

First of all KEEP MOVING.  Nothing is harder to hit than a moving target.  On the other hand, your aim will suck unless you lead your aim before the jump while squeezing off a well timed shot.  I recommend jumping as a last resort.  In other words if your trying to escape try jumping out of there in a “zig zag” pattern during a retreat.  Go on the offensive while jumping only if you’ve practiced shooting this way and are a good shot.  If your no good at timing your shots then avoid this strategy.

2. Learn the Maps

NOTHING is more important than learning the maps.  How many players out there actually take the time to learn?  Not many.  So, if you have some patience, spend an afternoon studying the maps by yourself private multiplayer.  Bring a notepad and find the best sniping locations.  Note where the weapon spawns are located.  Take a look at Bungie.net and study the heat maps to see where most players gather and die.  Halo multiplayer pros definitely do this between their 5 hour gaming sessions as a debriefing to “Strategize”.  You should too if you want to be any good.

3. Close in Combat

The best players use a long range weapon like the Battle Rifle to “soften” a target before going into a melee attack with a shotgun or pistol.  I prefer to give my oppenant a beat down with a rifle butt close in.  Another method to “soften” a targets shields before going in for a kill is to use a grenade then a short range weapon or a melee beat down.  It is a common misconception that the person who placed the best shots before a melee comes out on top.  That’s only partially true.  When two players are charging towards one another after a long distance shoot out, the person who wins the beat down is the player with the most shields.  So if your beeping and you opponent is beeping hopefully your the one with the most shields left over before the smack-down begins.

5. Splash Damage

If you have an explosive weapon such as a rocket launcher, aim for the feet of your opponent. It’s more likely to hit your enemy due to the splash damage.

5. Head Shots are Key

PRACTICE aiming and try to go for head shots. It is the quickest and most effective way of taking down your enemy.  The best players are adept at shooting the battle and sniper rifles.  Also, adjust your controller sensitivity settings.  The pros tweak everything, most don’t settle for default controller settings.  Find out what works best for you.

6. Vehicles “Ramming Speed”

Choose vehicles when they are to your advantage on wide open area maps.  Sandbox is a good map to score high on by mowing people down.  You can get lots of kills very quickly.  Remember, your a large “juicy” moving target that will get lots of attention so you may not last long.  Try jumping in and out of different vehicles during the game and if playing on a team with gunners, KEEP THE VEHICLE MOVING!  STOPPING MEANS YOUR DONE.

7. Weapon Combos

Experiment with weapon combinations to suit your situation. Usually dual wielding is best for close range (with maximum damage), whereas rifles are best for medium-long distance.  Another great tip while fighting, DO NOT BACK DOWN.  What?  If you want to win more battles then never back pedal from a head to head fight, always move forward.  You’ll increase damage to your opponent and the chance you’ll come out on top will increase.

8. Grenadier

Practice throwing “lobbing” grenades at distance to “soften” your enemies shields then go in for the kill.  Also, hide and wait for a few battling players to walk by.  Let them beat down each others shields then throw a grenade into their mists to sustain a double kill.  If an opponent sees you and decides to chase you down a corridor drop a grenade in their path, then go in for an easy kill.  Timing is everything with grenades so be patient and always have the best grenade selected and ready to use.

9. Team Up

This one is simple.  Staying close to your team members will ensure you live a little longer.  Be ready for lots of attention and the ensuing battle.  If you begin to see red X’s popping up on your screen ahead then change plans.

10. Talk Smack and RADAR!

Keep in close contact with your team at all times.  Know where they are and always reference your RADAR when available.  Know where your enemy is and anticipate his/her moves.  Very important!
