The Greatest RPG Ever!
I usually pick up a game for the PC or Xbox and I try to finish it. The average shooter will last maybe 25 hours and I’ll spend a month or more playing it. I don’t like to sit down and finish a game over a weekend. I didn’t buy the game just finish it and brag that a certain title is a done deal for me. So why do I play? Yes, I like to finish the games, but I enjoy savoring the artwork, the sound effects and musical score, the special graphical effects, and of course the story.
Story is why I even choose to pick up an RPG. For me, playing a Role Playing Game is more satisfying than reading a novel or watching a movie. Your the main character and you choose when and where the story goes. You help set the tone and mood depending on the style of your play. Aggressive, passive, or anywhere in between.
I’ve played a few RPG’s in my time beginning with pen and paper games developed by TSR during the 80′s and 90′s. Mostly the famed Dungeons and Dragons module adventures first developed by the late Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson during the mid to late 1970′s when computer games were very much in their infancy. Your mind is a wonderful playground, but when you can see it up there on the computer screen and you take control of the adventure that is something special.
Only a few RPG’s go down in the annals of gaming history as being the best. These creations are becoming better and better with only one worth mentioning here as being one of the greatest RPG creations of all time. Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion developed by Bethesda Software is a well rounded piece of computer art. The writing, musical score, artwork, and effects are all top notch. For instance I could enter a pub in the game and admire the flickering light from a candle. It’s that well done! There is so much to do and explore in the game it’s up to you how long you can go. I had finished most of the side quests and guild quests before tackling the main story quest. After completing the main story I still felt the game had lots to offer with explorations and quests as well as downloadable content from Xbox Live.
Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion is truely a master piece that will be talked about for years to come. If you have been hesitant to go down and pick up a copy for the PC or Xbox, do it now. You won’t regret it!
